Product details

The BCM KMR ALPHA is a free-float KeyMod handguard for AR-15 and M4 rifles, machined entirely from aluminum with a continuous 1913 Picatinny top rail.

The ALPHA is the all-aluminum generation of BCM's KMR, and the numbers are the argument: 8.6 oz (245 g) for a 15" tube and 9.9 oz (280 g) for a 17". Very little else gives you that much rail length for that little mass. BCM's proprietary mounting, indexing and lock-up system mitigates movement at the 12 o'clock rail caused by heat traveling through the barrel nut, which is what keeps a long top rail honest between the receiver sight and a muzzle-end backup.

At these lengths the free-float principle earns its keep twice over. The support hand goes right out to the muzzle for maximum control of the rifle, and a bipod or barricade stop can sit at the very front — and none of that load reaches the barrel.

KeyMod slots run at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock with four further offset positions between the clock faces, so accessories can be indexed exactly where the hand wants them rather than where the slot happens to be. The handguard flares forward approximately ¼" at 3 and 9 o'clock, and a BCM KeyMod sling mount is supplied.

How It Compares

Accessories must be KeyMod — M-LOK hardware will not fit these slots, and if your accessories are M-LOK the MCMR is the equivalent tube in that interface.

Key Features

  • 8.6 oz (245 g) at 15" — full-length rail coverage with very little weight penalty
  • Free-float tube — bipod, sling and hand load never reach the barrel
  • Patent-pending lock-up — mitigates 12 o'clock rail movement as heat reaches the barrel nut
  • Eight KeyMod positions — 3, 6 and 9 o'clock plus four offsets, so accessories sit where the hand wants them
  • Continuous 1913 top rail — one plane from receiver to muzzle for sights and night vision

Compatibility & Fitment

Fits AR-15/M4 upper receivers, and clears barrels up to 1.0" (25.4 mm) in diameter. At 15" and 17" these are long tubes: they need a low-profile gas block and a barrel long enough that the handguard does not overhang the muzzle device, so measure from the receiver face to the muzzle before ordering. Fitting replaces the barrel nut with BCM's own, so it is an armorer's job rather than a slip-on swap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will M-LOK accessories fit the KMR ALPHA?
No. KeyMod and M-LOK are different interfaces and the hardware is not interchangeable. If your lights, grips and sling mounts are M-LOK, either switch to KeyMod versions or choose BCM's MCMR, which is the same free-float concept with M-LOK slots. A short Picatinny rail section in KeyMod will let you carry Picatinny accessories on the KMR.

Is 15" or 17" right for my rifle?
Both are full-length tubes and both need a low-profile gas block. Measure from the upper receiver face to the rear of the muzzle device: the handguard must end short of it. A 16" barrel commonly takes the 15"; the 17" is for 18" and longer barrels, or a 16" barrel with a pinned and welded device where the numbers work out. If the tube would overhang the muzzle device, go shorter.

How heavy is it once fitted?
The 15" handguard alone is 8.6 oz (245 g) and 11 oz (310 g) with its mounting hardware. The 17" is 9.9 oz (280 g) alone and 12.3 oz (350 g) fitted. That is light for the length — a quad rail of comparable length is substantially heavier because the Picatinny is machined into all four faces.

What does the forward flare do?
The tube flares out approximately ¼" at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions toward the front. It gives the support hand a positive index near the muzzle end without adding a separate hand stop, so you get the same hand placement shot after shot.
