Fixed vs Variable Magnification Scopes

Most riflescopes today are variable-magnification zooms, but fixed-power optics still have a strong case. Knowing the trade-off helps you avoid paying for versatility you will not use.

Fixed magnification: simple and rugged

A fixed-power optic has one magnification and fewer internal moving parts. That means less to break, lower weight, and often a lower price for the glass quality — plus a reticle that is always calibrated to one power. The battle-proven ACOG is the classic example; see ACOG vs LPVO. The obvious limit is a single magnification.

Variable magnification: versatile

A variable scope covers a range — 1-6x, 3-9x, 5-25x — letting one optic handle close and far. That flexibility is why variables dominate hunting and long-range shooting. The costs are more complexity, more weight, and (in second focal plane models) holdovers that are only true at one power — see FFP vs SFP.

Which should you choose?

  • Fixed for a lightweight, rugged, simple optic where your distance is fairly consistent.
  • Variable for one optic that adapts across distances and roles.
