Reflex red dots and holographic weapon sights both give you a fast, both-eyes-open aiming point with effectively unlimited eye relief. How they produce that reticle is where they part ways.
How each one works
A reflex red dot sight reflects an LED off a coated lens back to your eye. It is simple, efficient and rugged — the reason a quality micro dot can run for years on a single battery.
A holographic weapon sight (the technology EOTech built its name on) uses a laser to reconstruct a holographic reticle floating in the window. That allows crisp, detailed reticles and lets the sight keep working even if the window is cracked or partially obstructed. The trade-off is higher power draw, so runtime is measured in hundreds or low thousands of hours rather than years.
Reticle and astigmatism
Holographic reticles can be more intricate — a ring-and-dot is common and helps both fast acquisition and precision. Shooters with astigmatism often report that a holographic reticle looks cleaner to them than a simple dot, which can appear as a starburst or comma. If a plain dot has never looked round to you, that alone can decide the question.
Battery, size and cost
- Red dots win on battery life, size, weight and price. Many run "always on" for years.
- Holographic sights win on reticle detail, obstructed-window performance and (for some eyes) reticle clarity, at the cost of runtime and a larger housing.
The middle path: add a magnifier
